Given that part of the Semblio model is the reuse of content and content components, we would be interested in hearing about any plans Microsoft may have to support both free content sharing and the business model of commerical content / components.

Hi Michael-

Thanks for the question, and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Our approach to connecting the content producers with content consumers will center around using existing infrastructures and online properties Microsoft has today, but with more focus on how to make the content our commercial partners provide more discoverable to the end consumers-educators and students.

For example, a sister organization to the Education Product Group has a program called  The Innovative Teachers Network (ITN)  which is a global community of over a million educators in 75 countries . Through the Innovative Teachers Network, educators gain access to lesson plans, how-to articles, inquiry-based student projects, and step-by-step implementation instructions—the tools they need to help transform their classroom into a technology-rich environment.  We believe we can have a much deeper engagement with the Innovative Teachers Network as being a distribution channel for supporting Semblio content produced by our content partners.  This material could be sample lesson plans which include links back to our partners site for the purchase of a more robust set of lessons or curriculum.

This example could also be applied to other Microsoft community sites or marketplaces, Office Online comes to mind.  Office Online offers free templates, classroom lessons, and other content resources specifically designed for educators and students; leveraging this site, as well as their partner marketplace, is another means to enhance the discoverability of the content our partners are producing.

I think you’ll see our strategy evolve around providing a more relevant experience to both our content providers as well as our consumers by leveraging our existing properties vs. building a new community learning exchange.

Thanks,

Scott.
